“When kids are on their phones all the time especially social media they often compare themselves to other kids which can contribute to feelings of anxiety, depression, worthlessness, hopelessness, even as far as increasing suicide risk,” said Dr. Dorian A. Lamis

“These are two big contributing factors to negative mental health. Ask yourself, is this a rational, logical thing to do at this time? The stock piling of products is a temporary thing – a temporary relief of stress,” said Dr. Dorian A. Lamis

‘Some research has suggested that the timing of puberty in girls is a contributing factor for the increased suicide rate,’ said Lamis, ‘Puberty starts as early as 8 in some girls. The psychosocial and physical changes may leave girls ‘vulnerable to depression, anxiety and other psychiatric disorders earlier on in life.’ These known risk factors for suicide may catch up with a girl as she grows older.”

Lamis said the hormonal, mental and physical changes associated with puberty may leave teen girls “vulnerable to depression, anxiety and other psychiatric disorders earlier on in life.”

“Some research has suggested that the timing of puberty in girls is a contributing factor for the increased suicide rate,” said Lamis

“Reducing stigma about mental health and suicide is one strategy that may help people feel more comfortable expressing their feelings and seeking services…” says Dr. Dorian Lamis

“Around 50 to 75% of people who die by suicide have given some kind of warning of their intentions to a friend or family member,” said Lamis.
